Is It Safe to Drink Tap Water?
Most of us don’t think about the water we drink. We turn on a tap, fill a glass, and drink. But is it safe to drink tap water? In this post, I’d like to give you a concrete answer.
In general, tap water provides the same health benefits as any other type of water: it keeps you hydrated, helps your blood flow, lubricates your joints and other tissues, and is necessary for lots of the biological processes that keep you alive. Besides, it may contain fluoride in some areas to improve your oral health.
However, no tap waters in the United States are good for your health. Some of them may contain certain amounts of contaminants like lead, arsenic, and mercury. If within the legal range, they don’t pose any risk to your health. If crossing the red line, they can lead vulnerable people, such as those undergoing chemotherapy, who are HIV-positive or pregnant, to serious illness.
If you are in a high-risk group or live in a city where water quality is compromised, you need to be alert to your tap water.
Unfortunately, there are three alternatives: bottled water, filtered water, and boiling water. Among them, I’d like to recommend filtered water first for its convenience and health.
Filtered water is exactly what it sounds like: tap water that has gone through some sort of filter that can clear out many safety concerns like bacteria, heavy metals, and pesticides.
If you invest in a filter, choose one that removes the specific contaminants you’re concerned about. Also, be sure the filter is independently certified by the NSF.
