Why is It So Dangerous to Reuse Plastic Water Bottles?
With people’s environmental awareness growing day by day, many of us develop the habit of reusing plastic water bottles in daily life, in an attempt to make the earth a greener place. However, is this act beneficial or harmful to your bodily health? In this post, I’d like to reveal the answer to you.
Plastic water bottles are mainly made from polyethylene terephthalate, a substance approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for single and repeated use.
But to save the cost many manufacturers choose to make these bottles for the purpose of a single use, so they don’t last long.
Two things can happen if you use your plastic water bottles over and over again: chemicals may leach from the bottles into the water, and bacteria can grow in the bottles once they are opened.
Researchers found that chemical leaching happens in small amounts, so we don’t have to worry much about that.
Bacterial growth, however, is the real culprit for the safety of reusing plastic water bottles.
These bacteria generally come from your hands and mouth, and hard to be removed by cleaning. They can make you very sick almost like having food poisoning, and cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
Of course, I’m not saying you should never reuse your plastic water bottles. After all, we only have one earth, and we need to take care of it. You can wash your plastic water bottles after each use with soap and hot water, and thoroughly dry them, to get rid of the bacteria as much as possible.
Last but not least, I’d like to remind you that recycling your plastic water bottles is the safest option. To be more environmentally friendly, please properly handle these plastics after using or hand them to the local recycling centers.
Note: If you think plastic water bottles are harmful to the earth, why not try drinking filtered water. By using refrigerator water filters, you can not only save your money, but also protect the planet. Here I’d like to recommend you choose Mountain Flow. This type of filters have been certified by the NSF and very affordable. It deserves you having a try if you need filters.
